Fashion Morgue File - 1960’s to 1980’s

The Ask:

For my 21st Century Fashion class at VCU, I was tasked with compiling a historical compilation, or “Morgue File” of different decades’ fashion. My favorite one from the project encompasses my favorite decades of the 1960’s to the 1980’s, as I love the fashion.

Skills & Process

The skills I needed were artistic composition and design, historical research, political research, and textile research. This combined both fashion and the society that had shaped it, so making sure everything harmonized was key. As for the process, it was a bit tedious as making everything look polished and coordinated was time consuming. Especially as each decade had its own theme, but the thematic styles as well as writing needed to be consistent throughout. Nonetheless, I think it came out both informative and aesthetically pleasing, which was the goal.

Key Takeaways

This project improved my design capabilities, especially with spacing and traditional design principles. As well, my ability to easily distinguish and differentiate the different sociocontexts of decades and their effects on fashion.
