The End of History and The Last Man - Book Analysis

The Ask:

I was tasked with analyzing a given book from a list of authors whose theories we’d studied for my International Relations class at VCU. The book I chose was The End of History and The Last Man by Francis Fukuyama, who believed that Western Democracy has reached its peak in society.

Skills & Process

The skills I needed were textual analysis, political research, as well as comparative analysis between different authors and philosophers. Additionally, historical and world research in order to understand different countries’ systems. The process was intensive, as the book itself is intensive - Fukuyama handles material that is rich and grave in turn, and I needed to do it justice. However, once I got in the groove it was smooth sailing. Writing is my strong suit, especially analytical essays, and I found myself having a surprising amount of fun with it.

Key Takeaways

While I am strong in analytical essays, this one gave me a refined edge with its formality that I will be able to add to future works. Additionally, this strengthened my ability to analyze political history, contexts of different countries and their governments, and critically think about a philosophy’s position within its time.
